RE-BUILDS
A re-build, as opposed to a re-plate or overhaul, addresses
the performance of all the instrument’s components in relation to the
player’s specific needs. Players usually consider such a process, when
their instrument starts looking worn, or performance has deteriorated,
and the finished instrument frequently performs better than when it was
new! With new instrument prices soaring, a re-build can be a very cost-effective
option.
Assessment:
The owner can bring or send the instrument to the workshop, or provide
low resolution photos by email. This should provide enough details to
price the job. All work on an instrument will affect its performance in
some way, and players often use a re-build as an excuse to tweak theirs,
usually with a replacement leadpipe, but assorted bells, triggers, finishes
etc are all possible. By far the most common make of trumpets seen in
the workshop, are Vincent Bachs. These trumpets are very robust, and even
the most worn examples can often warrant a re-build. Many older models
are highly sought-after, and re-built examples can represent some of the
best trumpets ever built.
The Process:
In most cases, the bell and leadpipe are removed. All parts are then
re-surfaced and polished by hand. This time consuming process ensures
that a minimum amount of metal is removed. The instrument is then ultra-sonically
de-scaled and assembled as per customer requirements. After plating/lacquering,
slides and valves are checked for correct fit, and new valve-felts are
fitted to ensure correct vertical alignment. Finally, the instrument is
play-tested. After such extensive work the instrument may need a little
time to run-in. During this time, valves will become smoother, and the
instrument’s playing characteristics will blossom. After about two weeks
of daily playing, the instrument should reach peak performance, and then
a thorough clean is recommended.
Price:
The average price for a re-build is around £5-600.00, excluding the
price of any new components.
