HOT NEWS FOR 2008! Announcing The Spencer U.K. Bb Trumpet
Will is delighted to announce that his new range of Spencer U.K. Bb trumpets is now available. As you have come to expect from Will Spencer, these beautiful instruments are built and finished to the highest standards.
But the the thing everyone is talking about is the way they play! Will has deliberately not announced these fantastic new instruments until extensive players tests had been completed and he was completely satisfied with the final results - which are quite astonishing. The best sound around, perfect intonation, complete control from ppp to fff, reliable and fast valves, and great looks too.
With many different variants, including leadpipe and bell combinations, each instrument is personally designed and built in consultation to meet your specific requirements. Despite this, these instruments are very competitively priced.
Spencer U.K. instruments are constructed around a high specification German built ML bore (11.568 mm) block, made to a similar weight to the Bach Stradivarius. As well as delivering fast, reliable valve action, this gives a good core to the sound.
The Will Spencer modular fitting design is becoming ever more popular, with numerous custom-built examples already in many of our top professional orchestras. Modular design permits many different leadpipes and bells to be used with the same valve block allowing a great deal of versatility. Whilst originally designed for the purpose of interchangeability, the rigid yet minimal bracing configuration has in many cases been thought to actually improve the performance of the instrument because the solid modular fittings provide excellent transference of vibrations right across the instrument. The instrument also comes with adjustable bracing which permits you to further experiment and fine tune response and projection. A wide range of options are available with a personal service from Will Spencer to help you choose the combination that is right for you. Please see below for full details.
Mouthpipe and Tuning Slide Options A collaboration with M/K drawing in Wisconsin has helped to produce an extremely versatile instrument using leadpipe tapers from some of the great classic instruments of our time, combined with state of the art tuning slide technology. The mouthpipes and tuning slides are currently available in Yellow Brass, Bronze and Sterling Silver.
Tuning slides are described in more detail here.
Below is a description of some of the most popular leadpipes.
Red 5 The most often used leadpipe is based on a Bach 25 and made of bronze. It has a very clear and distinctive attack and gives a characteristically warm and colourful tone, even when played extremely quietly. However, when pushed, can sound bright, without getting harsh. It is generally praised for its versatility.
Yellow 5 Is basically a Bach 25 and gives a classic tone colour. If you can't get on with the red 5, try this one.
Red 7
The 7 is an exact copy of the classic Mt. Vernon Bach leadpipe. It has similar qualities to the red 5, but is more focussed and slightly brighter, allowing it to work well in small ensembles. It can still pack a punch in a big band or symphony orchestra.
Sterling 5
This pipe offers a very large range of overtones and is very responsive,
though slightly less focussed than the other pipes due to its thin walled construction. This is probably the easiest pipe to play. A heavier version will be available soon.

Sterling 7
The 7 is an exact copy of the classic Mt. Vernon Bach leadpipe, this time in Sterling Silver. This pipe is very lively and works particularly well in a commercial setting. It still makes a big open sound in the lower register, but the high register is where it really comes into its own.
Bell Options The bell is currently offered in two weights:
- Standard Weight
- Heavy Weight (30 grammes silver insulated)
You can however fit a bell or leadpipe of your own choice from any other manufacturer.
Personal Consultancy Service
Like many modular styles, the combination of different components is daunting and therefore clients need to be guided through the various combinations depending on their needs. This occurs when originally purchasing an instrument. Will Spencer is happy to provide personal advice on the right combination of options to suit the style and sound each customer wants to achieve. You can then take the instrument into the various bands, orchestras and ensembles in which the instrument is to be used, and test it "in the battle zone", and you may find that a few alternative slide/leadpipe combinations may help you make the final choice.
Finish All Spencer U.K. instruments are 12 micron silver plated to a high standard and polished to a mirror finish. Currently, a lacquer finish is not available.
We are unable to offer a gold plate list price option as standard, because gold prices are now at an all-time high - However, if you are interested in plating with gold or any other finish, please contact us for a quote.
